Patterns and Poetry
Silly Horse is a book filled with imaginative poems and beautiful
illustrations. It is a good tool to help students minds fill with creativity and
learn about poetry.

Lesson
1.
Discuss with students what a poem is. Does
is have to rhyme? Does is tell a story? Does it tell about emotion?
2.
Read “Silly Horse” to students. Make sure
to really highlight the creative illustrations, rhymes, and the pattern of
rhymes.
Activity
I.
Examining the Poem
1.
Enlarge a poem of your choice and examine
it with students. Look for the rhyme, rhythm and pattern.
2.
Highlight the rhyme in the poem.
3.
Discuss the rhythm. Is it a AB AB poem? An
ABC ABC ABC poem?
4.
Make several copies of the different poems
in book. Break students into pairs and have them work together to identify the
rhyming words, and the rhythm of the poem.
II. Creating Poetry
1.
Have students break into pairs and create
their own poem. Give them guidelines that the poem can be about an imaginative
character, themselves, or an animal or pet.
III. Illustrate your Imagination
1.
Have each student decorate their poem with
illustrations. Have them embellish the writing, and create their own picture
book page.
2.
Have students share with class, their
poems, and illustrations.
