This
is the Sea that Feeds Us: Book Review
Author: Robert F. Baldwin
Illustrator: Don Deyen
Publisher: Dawn Publications
ISBN: 188322070X
This book has
beautiful full page pictures that help you see the connection between
the life forms in the sea and humans.
The flowing
rhyme of the story makes it easy to read, as the book moves from
the tiny plankton in the ocean to the girl’s fishing adventure. You
will learn about the ocean’s food chain through the spectacular paintings
and rhyming text. Each verse introduces another hungry sea creature.
The turquoise illustrations gives you the illusion (feeling) of being
in the sea. Several pages include facts about sea life at the bottom.
A delightful and colorful adventure that will keep you coming back
time after time.
Book
Excerpt:
“These are the
plankton, floating free,
zillions of
creatures alive in the sea,
making their
food from the light of the sun
that shines on
the sea that feeds us.
Here is a shrimp
as small as a snail
(lots of legs
and a squiggly tail)
dining on plankton,
floating free,
zillions of creatures
alive in the sea,
making their
food from the light of the sun
that shines on
the sea that feeds us.”
The book goes
on, telling of the “booming gale,” and how the girl
with the “sandy pail,” was delighted with the creatures she finds
on the beach. This is a terrific adventure about a mother and daughter
enjoying a fishing adventure.
In the back of
the book, you will find a section titled, “The Magic
of How the Sea Feeds Us.” The author tells us, “The smallest creatures
in the ocean are the real heroes of this story,” and he is right.
There’s lots of things to learn about how humans are connected to
the oceans. You’ll be amazed at how connected we really are to the
ocean. This is a book that tells us to “protect the oceans and keep
them healthy.” The oceans are important to the world and the people
that live on the Earth.
The very last
page of the book lists other great titles that are published by
Dawn Publications. Be sure to check them out for a great
reading experience. Ages 5 to 10
