Title: In the Blink of an Eye
Author & Illustrator: Dieter Weismuller
Publisher: Walker & Company
Publishing Date: March 2003

Ages: 5 to 8
If you want a
fantastic read, this book is for you. The eyes on each page challenge
you to guess what creature is watching you by
using the clues. The intense look of an unnamed animal is on the
left-hand side of the page. The author has gone into great detail
with the illustrations. Feathers, fur, scales and folds of skin surround
each eye. On the right-hand side of the spread you see the world
through the eye of the animal.
Example:
You see an
golden eye with varying tones of brown feathers around it. The
text reads: “She perches in her hollow and dreams of the
night to come. She hears you pass beneath her tree and awakes from
her day of sleep” This eye belongs to an owl.
The tempera illustrations
are marvelous. Humans appear in the animal’s
field of vision, but are not aware they are being watched. In the
most wondrous of the paintings, a girl stands motionless. Then, her
eyes lock with that of a rabbit. It is a profound moment when the
eyes of animal and human meet.
Weismuller’s
illustrations will make you realize you are never alone - not even
for a moment. There is always something
watching you wherever
you go. He captures a sense of marvel in the world and brings to
light the fact that humans and animals share planet Earth.
In all, there
are eleven eyes in the book. Try as you may, you will not be able
to spot the animals in their natural habitat. It is the
unseen animal that is watching you. From both visual and written
clues, you will be able to guess the creature each eye belongs to.
If you have not guessed them all by the end of the book, Weismuller
has included the answers.
The last eye
is that of a human watching the creatures in the book from a window.
It gives a view of different landscapes and habitats.
Weismuller has
used a fresh approach in helping you to appreciate the beauty of
nature. The international theme includes animals from
different habitats all over the world. This book has beautiful full
page illustrations and riddle text making it an awesome read for
the young and young at heart. Be sure and check for it at your local
bookstore or library.
